A few answers about SEO

1- What is the definition of SEO?

Definition of SEO on Wikipedia

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of trwikipedia.org iconaffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

The key phrase is “improving the volume or the quality of traffic”. SEO will not help a webmaster to get his site to be on the top of the search result page in a week, (no matter how a SEO consultant promises).

2- What is a good point on Wikipedia.org about SEO?

One point that I truly agree with Wikipedia’s SEO article is as follows

SEO may generate a return on investment. However, search engines are not paid for organic search traffic, their algorithms change, and there are no guarantees of continued referrals. Due to this lack of guarantees and certainty, a business that relies heavily on search engine traffic can suffer major losses if the search engines stop sending visitors.[40] It is considered wise business practice for website operators to liberate themselves from dependence on search engine traffic.[41] A top-ranked SEO blog Seomoz.org[42] has suggested, “Search marketers, in a twist of irony, receive a very small share of their traffic from search engines.” Instead, their main sources of traffic are links from other websites.

3- What is crawling and indexing?

These are 2 primary activities of many search engines. Search engines use web-crawlers to crawl various websites. These web-crawlers move from one site to another site using links on sites. These web-crawlers collect data about websites and report to search engines. These are the tasks of crawling. Search Engines also determine how often crawling should happen based on the friendliness of website contents.

As search engines gather information of website, they will evaluate the value of various web pages. Valuable web pages will be indexed in search engines database for displaying on the main search result page. This is the tasks of the indexing activity.

4- How can a webmaster get his website to be crawled by search engines?

First, he needs to avoid practices that prevent search engines to crawl his website. Websites that have plenty of errors will be considered unworthy. These errors are also called SEO obstacles. Deceiving practices or practices unapproved by search engines also should be avoided. These techniques are called spamdexing or black hat SEO.

Secondly, Scott Willoughby suggests that webmasters should improve all websites with respect to the following topics:

  • Links
  • Freshness
  • Feeds
  • Domain Importance
  • Viability
  • Specified Crawl Rate

Thirdly, a webmaster should consider using viral content spreading mechanism. When visitors of a website refer it to other friends, the website experiences increase in traffic. Search engine will note this increase of traffic as a positive quality of the website. It will decide to crawl more often.

Scott Willoughby also suggests, in Crawling & Indexing, improvements for the following items:

  • Uniques/Values
  • Domain Importance
  • raw link juice
  • External links
  • Search and Traffic Volume

6- What are SEO obstacles?

These are issues on a website that hinder the crawl of web crawlers. To make a site more “search-engines- friendly”, the SEO obstacles should be identified and removed. A few obvious obstacles are

  • Broken links on a website
  • xHTML/CSS errors
  • Link farms
  • Complicated sitemaps

7- What is black hat SEO?

Black hat SEO uses techniques that search engines do not approve. These techniques can help a website to gain traffic in a short time. But search engines may penalize sites as their uses of black hat techniques are discovered.

A few of the black hat SEO techniques are key word spam, link spam, link farm, cloaking.

The opposite techniques are categorized as “white hat”. The techniques require routine dedication of resources to build up the value of the website’s content.

White hat SEO is not just about following guidelines, but is about ensuring that the content a search engine indexes and subsequently ranks is the same content a user will see. White hat advice is generally summed up as creating content for users, not for search engines, and then making that content easily accessible to the spiders, rather than attempting to trick the algorithm from its intended purpose. 9- What is social media marketing?

Social media marketing is descibribed on wikipedia as follows

Social media marketing also known as social influence marketing is the act of using social influencers, social media platforms, online communities for marketing, publication relations and customer service. Common social media marketing tools include Twitter, blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.

In the context of Internet marketing, social media refers to a collective group of web properties whose content is primarily published by users, not direct employees of the property (e.g. the vast majority of video on YouTube is published by non-YouTube employees).

Social media optimization (SMO) is a set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites.

Social media marketing has two important aspects:

(1) Adding links to services such as Digg, Reddit and Del.icio.us so that their pages can be easily ‘saved and submitted’ to and for these services.

(2) Building ways that fans of a brand or company can promote it themselves in multiple online social media venues.

According to Lloyd Salmons, first chairman of the Internet Advertising Bureau social media council “Social media isn’t just about big networks like Facebook and MySpace, it’s about brands having conversations.”[1].

10- How should the home page be written for SEO purpose?

First, important keywords must be identified. Then the keywords must be seen/indicated in

  • title of the page, i.e. tag
  • meta description of the page
  • 1 photo image that represents the keyword’s meaning
  • tag of the image
  • headline
  • first 50-100 words of the content of the page
  • link(s) existed above the content
  • links to prestigious site of the topics of the keywords

As mentioned above, content is king and content must support the strategic keywords. Randfish’s article on SEOMoz perfectly discusses the answer to this question.
